Kenya eTA for Indian Passport Holders: Official Fees & Guide

If you are planning a safari in the Maasai Mara or a vacation to Mombasa, obtaining a kenya eta for indian passport holders is your mandatory first step. On January 5, 2024, Kenya permanently retired its legacy e-Visa portal (evisa.go.ke) and abolished all visas on arrival. In their place, the Kenyan government introduced a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system administered exclusively through www.etakenya.go.ke.

Every Indian citizen traveling to Kenya—including infants and young children—must secure an approved eTA PDF before arriving at the airport in India. Airline staff will deny boarding if you do not have a printed or digital copy of your approved authorization.

The “Visa-Free” Confusion: What Changed for Indian Travelers?

Early 2024 media headlines proclaimed “Kenya Goes Visa-Free,” leading many travelers to assume they could board a flight to Nairobi with just a passport and buy a stamp at the airport. This is incorrect. Visa on arrival in Kenya has been permanently discontinued.

Kenya did not eliminate entry permissions; it digitized and streamlined them. Instead of a traditional visa sticker or complex paper application, Kenya now uses a digital pre-screening system similar to security authorizations used by countries like Canada or the Seychelles. The eTA allows Kenyan authorities to process immigration checks before you board your flight.

While many destination rules are shifting globally—similar to recent updates for Malaysia Visa for Indians or Sri Lanka Visa rules—Kenya’s eTA remains a mandatory, paid pre-approval process for all Indian passport holders.

The Yellow Fever Trap: Health Rules Every Indian Traveler Must Know

One of the most common mistakes Indian travelers make when planning a Kenyan trip involves health regulations. Many standard visa agencies overlook Yellow Fever rules, which can lead to denied entry or forced quarantine.

1. Entering Kenya from India

If you fly directly from India to Kenya (for example, on an Air India or Kenya Airways non-stop flight from Mumbai to Nairobi), Kenya’s Ministry of Health does not require you to show a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate upon arrival. India is not a Yellow Fever endemic zone.

The Transit Exception: If your flight transits through a Yellow Fever endemic country (such as Ethiopia via Addis Ababa Bole International Airport) for more than 12 hours, Kenyan immigration will require a valid Yellow Fever certificate upon entry.

2. Returning to India from Kenya (The Critical Rule)

While Kenya might let you in without a Yellow Fever card on a direct flight, India will not let you back in freely without one.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India classifies Kenya as a Yellow Fever Endemic Zone. Under Indian health regulations, any passenger arriving in India from or through Kenya must show an official international Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (Yellow Card) at Indian port health officers.

Warning: If you land back in India from Kenya without a valid Yellow Card (or if your vaccine was administered less than 10 days before your arrival in Kenya), Indian authorities will place you in mandatory institutional airport quarantine for up to 6 days at your own expense. There are no exceptions to this rule.

3. How to Get Your Yellow Fever Vaccination in India

  • Where: You must get vaccinated at a Ministry of Health-authorized Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre in India (such as Airport Health Offices, Port Health Offices, or designated government hospitals in major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai).
  • Timeline: You must take the vaccine at least 10 days before your travel date for the certificate to become valid under international health regulations.
  • Validity: A single dose provides lifetime immunity. Per WHO regulations updated in July 2016, booster shots are no longer required by law.

4. Polio and Other Health Considerations

Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) certificates are not required for Indian citizens traveling directly to Kenya for tourism (this rule primarily applies to travelers arriving from Somalia). However, taking anti-malarial prophylaxis tablets before visiting wildlife parks, game reserves, or coastal resorts like Mombasa and Diani Beach is recommended by travel health advisors.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for Kenya eTA for Indian Passport Holders

If you are a first-time international traveler from India, the eTA portal is simple to navigate if you follow these precise steps:

Step 1: Access the Official Government Portal

Navigate to www.etakenya.go.ke on your desktop browser or download the official “Kenya Travel Authorisation” mobile application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Never use search engine ad links that point to third-party travel agencies.

Step 2: Select Your Application Type

Choose “Individual Application” if traveling solo. If you are traveling as a family or group, select “Group / Family Application”. The group mode allows you to file all family members (including infants) under one primary contact reference number, simplifying payment and tracking.

Step 3: Scan and Upload Your Documents

Upload the high-resolution scan of your Indian passport bio-data page and your face selfie. The portal utilizes an automated Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system that reads your passport image and automatically fills in your full name, passport number, birth date, and expiry date.

Step 4: Verify Pre-Filled Personal Details

Carefully review the auto-filled details. If the software mistook a number ‘0’ for a letter ‘O’ or misspelled a middle name, manually edit the text boxes so that every character matches your physical passport.

Step 5: Provide Contact and Travel Itinerary Data

Input your intended arrival date, departure date, flight numbers, and point of entry (for most Indian travelers, this will be Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – JKIA in Nairobi or Moi International Airport in Mombasa).

Step 6: Upload Accommodation Vouchers

Attach PDF or JPG copies of your hotel booking vouchers, safari lodge confirmations, or your host’s formal invitation letter along with their Kenyan ID.

Step 7: Complete Health & Security Declarations

Answer a short series of standard security background questions regarding prior travel history, criminal history, and current health status.

Step 8: Pay the Official eTA Fee

Proceed to the checkout gateway to pay the $34.09 USD total charge per traveler. Use a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card. Before clicking pay, ensure your bank’s mobile app has “International Online Transactions” toggled ON and that your card’s daily limit exceeds the total dollar amount.

Step 9: Receive Confirmation and Print Your eTA

Upon payment, you will immediately receive a payment receipt and an Application Reference Number via email. Standard processing takes up to 72 hours. Once approved, you will receive an email containing a link to download your official Kenya eTA Approval PDF.

Print a physical paper copy of this eTA PDF to present at airline check-in counters in India and at Kenyan immigration desks. Keep a backup PDF copy saved on your smartphone.

The EAC Multi-Country Loophole: Re-Entering Kenya from Tanzania or Uganda

A classic East African holiday itinerary combines a Kenyan safari in the Maasai Mara with a Tanzanian safari in the Serengeti, or a gorilla trek in Uganda followed by a trip home from Nairobi. Travelers often worry whether they need to reapply and pay for a second eTA when returning to Kenya for their homeward flight.

Kenya immigration maintains a special re-entry exception for travelers exploring the East African Community (EAC) member states.

How the EAC Exception Works

The standard Kenya eTA is technically a Single Entry permission. However, if you leave Kenya to travel into an EAC partner state—defined as Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, or the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—and return directly to Kenya, your original eTA remains valid for re-entry, provided that:

  1. Your original Kenya eTA has not expired (it remains valid for up to 90 days from issuance).
  2. You did not travel to any non-EAC country (such as Dubai, Qatar, India, or Ethiopia) between leaving Kenya and re-entering it.

For example, if you fly Mumbai → Nairobi → safari in Maasai Mara → cross land border into Serengeti (Tanzania) → fly Zanzibar to Nairobi → fly Nairobi to Mumbai, you do NOT need to buy a second Kenya eTA for your return transit/stay in Nairobi. Your initial eTA remains valid at the airport immigration counter.

Common Rejection Reasons & Technical Pitfalls

While the eTA approval rate for Indian tourists is high, minor technical oversights can cause processing delays or outright rejections. Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Scam Websites and Inflated Fees: Dozens of unofficial websites mimic the layout of the Kenyan portal. They collect your information and charge anywhere from $90 to $150 USD, often failing to submit your application to Kenya Immigration. Always double-check that your browser address bar displays www.etakenya.go.ke.
  • Failed Card Transactions: Payment failures are a common reason applications stall. Most Indian public and private sector banks (such as HDFC, SBI, ICICI, or Axis Bank) disable international online usage by default on new credit/debit cards. Enable international payments via your banking app before completing the checkout process.
  • Submitting Non-Compliant Photos: Do not upload cropped photos from old physical passport pictures or selfies taken in dim lighting. Ensure your photograph is crisp, uses a bright white background, and shows both ears clearly without shadows or eyeglasses.
  • Unconfirmed Accommodation Vouchers: Entering “Hotel in Nairobi” without providing a confirmed booking voucher or specific address can cause your application to be flagged for manual review, extending processing time past 72 hours.
  • Omitting Minors: Parents occasionally submit applications for themselves while assuming young children travel free under an adult’s approval. Children of all ages must hold an individual, approved eTA tied to their passport number.
  • Typos in Passport Details: Transposing numbers in your passport number or misspelling your surname will render your eTA invalid at the airport, requiring you to re-apply from scratch while at the check-in desk.

Practical Travel Context for Indian Tourists in Kenya

Preparing for your actual trip involves coordinating flights, currency, and local transit. Here is practical advice for Indian passport holders heading to East Africa:

1. Flight Gateways

Non-stop direct flights operated by Air India and Kenya Airways connect Mumbai (BOM) directly to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO/JKIA) in roughly 6 hours. If traveling from Delhi, Bengaluru, or Chennai, single-stop itineraries via Mumbai, Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), or the Gulf (Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad) are popular alternatives.

2. Safari Lodges and Hotel Vouchers

When booking safari itineraries through travel operators, ensure you receive formal, itemized lodging vouchers for every park you visit (e.g., Maasai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Hell’s Gate, or Tsavo East). You will upload these exact PDF vouchers during your eTA application.

3. Currency, Forex, and Payments

  • US Dollars (USD): USD is widely accepted across Kenyan safari lodges, park entry gates, and tourist hubs. However, US Dollar bills printed before 2013 are widely rejected across Kenya due to local banking anti-counterfeit regulations. Carry crisp USD notes printed in 2013 or later.
  • Kenyan Shilling (KES): Local currency is helpful for tipping safari drivers, buying souvenirs at local markets, or paying for meals outside hotel resorts. You can easily withdraw KES using an Indian international debit card at airport ATMs in Nairobi.
  • Credit Cards: Major safari lodges, upscale restaurants, and national parks accept Visa and Mastercard, though a standard forex markup fee (usually 3.5%) applies.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Is Kenya visa-free for Indian citizens in 2026?

No. While Kenya abolished its traditional e-Visa system, all Indian passport holders must apply for and obtain an approved Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online prior to boarding their flight. It is a mandatory pre-entry authorization, not an unrestricted visa-free entry.

2. Can Indian travelers get a Kenya visa on arrival at Nairobi airport?

No. Visa on arrival has been permanently discontinued in Kenya. You cannot buy a visa or eTA at the airport desk upon arrival. Airlines will deny boarding at Indian departure ports if you cannot present an approved eTA PDF.

3. Do infants and children need a Kenya eTA?

Yes. Every single traveler, regardless of age, must have an individual eTA. Parents can apply on behalf of their children using the “Group / Family Application” feature on the official portal.

4. What happens if I return to India from Kenya without a Yellow Fever card?

India’s Ministry of Health classifies Kenya as a Yellow Fever endemic zone. If you arrive back at an Indian airport without a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (issued at least 10 days before travel), Port Health Authorities will place you in mandatory institutional quarantine at an airport facility for up to 6 days at your own expense.

5. Can I re-enter Kenya from Tanzania on the same eTA?

Yes. If you leave Kenya to visit an East African Community (EAC) partner country—such as Tanzania, Uganda, or Rwanda—and return directly to Kenya without visiting any country outside the EAC, your original single-entry eTA remains valid for re-entry, provided it has not exceeded its 90-day validity period.

Plan Your Kenyan Safari with Confidence

Securing your Kenya eTA is straightforward once you have your flight bookings, lodge vouchers, and passport scans organized. Apply at least 1 to 2 weeks before your scheduled departure date through the official government portal, double-check your personal details against your passport MRZ lines, and ensure you complete your Yellow Fever vaccination at an authorized Indian center well in advance.
